LAS VEGAS (October 8, 2004) – Yamaha’s Chad Reed, of Dade City, Fla., won the opening night of racing in the 250cc class of the Maxxis U.S. Open inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
Former two-time Maxxis U.S. Open champion Ricky Carmichael, of Havana, Fla., led the first four laps of the main event, before Reed, the reigning Maxxis U.S. Open champion, caught and passed him. Honda’s Mike LaRocco worked his way into third place late in the race. Reed held on for the win and Carmichael finished second.
“Chad rode well tonight, but I am not going to give up,” said Carmichael. “I wish I could have given him more at the end, but I will be back tomorrow night. I will get better and show up ready.”
“It’s just like old times,” said Reed from the podium. “I chased Ricky (Carmichael) early and once I passed him, it sure was nice to be chased up front. You have to be on your game out here because there is another night of racing. I’m going to be ready for tomorrow.”
In the Pro Circuit 125cc main event Suzuki’s Davi Millsaps, of Cairo, Ga., passed early lead Greg Schnell, of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., on lap four. On lap seven Millsaps bobbled in the whoops, allowing Schnell to move into the lead. Schnell’s teammate, Thomas Hanh, of XX, passed Millsaps for second. Schnell, who made his way to the main event through the last chance qualifier, won the main event aboard his Honda. Hahn was second and Troy Adams was third.
“Our whole team works together each week to put in strong results,” said Schnell. “I took advantage of Millsaps’ mistake and moved into the lead. This was a great race for Factory Connection and myself.
Dominic Izzi, of St. Clair, Mich., won both motos of the 85cc mini race, earning top honors for the evening over Taylor Futrell, of Clinton, N.C., and PJ Larsen, of Anendan, S.C., who finished second and third respectively.
