AURORA,
Ill. (August 11, 2004) - The seventh Maxxis U.S. Open will
be televised nationally on NBC Sunday,
October
24, 2004 (4:30-6:00 PM EST) immediately following NBC’s
coverage of the Subway 500 NASCAR race from Martinsville.
The announcement was made by Charlie Mancuso, President,
Clear Channel Entertainment - Motor Sports and Jon Miller,
Senior Vice President, NBC Sports.
“
This is obviously one of the most significant announcements
in the history of the Maxxis U.S. Open. Now, along with the
largest single-event purse in the motorcycle world, this
event will be seen by more fans than any other motorcycle
race in the U.S.,” said Mancuso. “This is another
step forward in Clear Channel’s expanding relationship
with NBC. With our partnership with NBC Sports on the Dew
Action Sports Tour, the U.S. Open on NBC will deliver a level
of exposure to fans, riders, teams and sponsors like never
before.”
The U.S. Open, The World’s Richest Motorcycle Race,
is a natural fit for NBC Sports,” said NBC’s
Miller. “This race is a perfect compliment to our NASCAR
coverage that precedes the U.S. Open and it marks another
NBC/Clear Channel Motor Sports’ initiative following
on our joint venture creating the Dew Action Sports Tour.
NBC Sports looks forward to a great race, great ratings and
a continued positive relationship with Charlie (Mancuso)
and Clear Channel Entertainment - Motor Sports.”
Riders confirmed to compete in the 2004 Maxxis U.S. Open
include defending and current THQ AMA Supercross Series champion
Chad Reed, two-time U.S. Open champion and all-time AMA national
championship holder Ricky Carmichael.
Other invited athletes
include action sports superstar Travis Pastrana, up-and-coming
superstar, reigning 125cc Eastern
Regional THQ AMA Supercross Series champion James Stewart
and veteran Mike LaRocco, who won the 2002 U.S. Open.
