AURORA,
Ill. (August 5, 2004) - Clear Channel Entertainment’s
Motor Sports division announced today that three-time 250cc
THQ AMA Supercross Series champion and two-time Maxxis
U.S. Open champion Ricky Carmichael, 24, will make his
return to indoor motocross racing at the seventh-annual
Maxxis U.S. Open at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena
October 8-9.
Carmichael, of Havana, Fla., has won the U.S. Open two times
in his career (’00 & ’01) and is one of the
only riders to compete in every U.S. Open since it first started
going to Las Vegas’ prestigious MGM Grand Garden Arena
in 1998. One month prior to the 2003-2004 THQ World Supercross
GP/THQ AMA Supercross Series Carmichael injured his knee and
was forced to miss the entire season. Since then, he has returned
to the outdoor national circuit, winning all seven rounds of
competition. Carmichael is on pace to repeat the perfect outdoor
motocross season he had in 2002.
“
I have been waiting for a long time to get back on a supercross
track and compete in the U.S. Open,” said Carmichael. “This
is always a fun race for us, the riders, and for the fans.
Chad Reed rode great last year to win his first U.S. Open championship
- but I’m going there to win.”
In addition to defending Maxxis U.S. Open champion and current
THQ AMA Supercross Series champion Chad Reed, and two-time
U.S. Open champion and all-time AMA national championship holder
Ricky Carmichael, other riders invited to race at the 2004
Maxxis U.S. Open include action sports superstar Travis Pastrana,
and up-and-coming superstar and reigning 125cc Eastern Regional
THQ AMA Supercross Series champion James Stewart. Veteran Mike
LaRocco, who won the 2002 U.S. Open, has also been invited
to compete in this prestigious event.
