AURORA,
III. and MADRID, SPAIN (July 27, 2004) - Clear Channel
Entertainment’s
Motor Sports division and Dorna Off Road announced today
the two international rounds of THQ
World Supercross GP that comprise the 17-race world championship:
Toronto at SkyDome on December 4 and Vancouver, B.C.,
at BC Place on December 11.
SkyDome,
which is home of Major League Baseball’s Toronto
Blue Jays, boasts the world’s first fully retractable
roof that opens and closes in 20 minutes and covers more
than eight acres of property. At full capacity, SkyDome holds
65,000 fans spread out over five levels of seating. In addition,
there are seven bars and restaurants conveniently located
inside SkyDome, including a Hard Rock Café overlooking
the field. Since opening June 3, 1989, more than 2000
events and 50 million visitors have come to SkyDome.
BC
Place Stadium, the world’s largest air-supported
stadium in North America, plays host to its first-ever
THQ World Supercross GP in Vancouver, B.C. BC Place Stadium,
built in 1982, holds more than 60,000 seats and is covered
by fabric that is 1/30 inch thick but stronger than steel.
The stadium’s state-of-the-art technology goes
beyond the roof. The multi-functional venue has the capability
to host a variety of events, including concerts and football
games.
"
Toronto and Vancouver are perfect markets for the international
rounds of THQ World Supercross GP,” said Charlie Mancuso,
president, Clear Channel Entertainment - Motor Sports. “By
scheduling these races in such close proximity to the
United States, we expect to have full participation
from all of
the top riders. We recognize the demanding schedule
of the factory teams and privateers and that was a
priority
in our
scheduling efforts this season.
“
Additionally, Toronto and Vancouver offer the teams, riders
and sponsors very attractive branding and marketing opportunities.
The two Canadian events add diversity and creativity to the
THQ World Supercross GP schedule that will be aired worldwide
through the Dorna global television distribution network.
The proximity of Toronto and Vancouver to the United States’ border
also offers fans two added chances to see the top supercross
riders in the world and finally provides a supercross
event in the northeast, something fans have been anticipating
for a long time.”
The
two international races coupled with 15 of the domestic
races (excluding the Daytona Supercross)
comprise the
17-round THQ World Supercross GP. In 2003, Yamaha’s
Chad Reed, of Dade City, Fla., won the THQ World
Supercross GP championship,
capturing nine main event wins on the year. Last
season Heath Voss, of Mico, Texas piloted his Mach
1 Yamaha
to the THQ World Supercross GP championship, earning
top honors
and giving Yamaha its second world championship in
as many seasons.
