Mt. Morris, PA - May 30, 2004
By Steve Cox
James Stewart is back! Sure, he won both motos at the last round in Sacramento,
California, but questions arose as Stephane Roncada gave him fits for the
second race in a row. But at Mt. Morris, it was vintage Bubba, as the Chevy
Trucks Kawasaki rider dominated the proceedings, winning the two motos
by a combined total time of almost a minute over Team Suzuki’s Broc
Hepler.
Stewart is in his last season as a 125 class rider,
and has been so dominant his competition still continues
to battle for second place.
Hepler
didn’t get a chance to key off of Stewart
for very long, though. “I don’t think I
was that close,” Hepler said. “I didn’t
learn anything from him.”
Stewart started second in both motos, and quickly
took over the lead and left both times out, but Hepler
really showed maturity beyond his years, losing second
to Matt Walker early in moto one before reeling him
back in and passing him back to clinch the second spot.
“I just try to ride smooth, and it takes a smooth
rider to be consistent and put in good finishes all
year,” Hepler said. “That’s the way
I want to ride, and that’s the way I want to
be remembered. I would say I rode pretty tight at the
beginning. I was a little nervous in front of the crowd,
and he had some better lines than me and he actually
pulled away from me. I started riding smoother, and
I got back around him at the end with some decent lines.
It was good to get back around him like that.”
Hepler rode really strong, winning the non-Bubba class,
and scoring his first-career podium finish with a 2-2
showing ahead of Mike Brown, who went 4-3 for third.
“It’s always easy to ride on a track that
you’ve been to so many times,” said the
hometown boy Hepler. “I just really wanted to
do good, and that’s about it.”
