ATLANTA (February 28, 2004) - Yamaha’s Chad Reed,
of Dade City, Fla., raced to his sixth THQ World Supercross
GP/THQ AMA Supercross Series victory in front of 59,651
fans at the Georgia Dome. Kawasaki’s James Stewart
earned his third consecutive 125cc Eastern Regional THQ
AMA Supercross Series race, breaking the all-time 125cc
win record (13) previously held by Jeremy McGrath.
Honda’s Damon Huffman, of Valencia, Calif., earned
the $1,500 Butterfinger Holeshot Award, leading the field
through turn one. Kawasaki’s Reed made his way
into the lead on lap two and held on for the victory.
Windham, who started mid-pack due to a block pass by
Reed, moved into second place late in the race after
passing Yamaha’s David Vuillemin. Vuillemin fell
out of podium position when Honda rider Mike LaRocco
charged through the field to pass him.
“
I was riding for a win tonight,” said Reed. “I
need to get a streak going here. I know I have a decent
points lead, but you can never have enough. I really
liked the track here tonight and enjoyed the race.”
In the 125cc main event, Stewart, who finished fourth
in his heat race, passed the $1,000 Butterfinger Holeshot
Award winner Steve Boniface on lap one to take the lead.
Yamaha’s Josh Hansen, who finished second last
weekend in Minneapolis, trailed close behind. Stewart
pulled away from the field and Hansen held down second
place until crashing on lap seven. Suzuki’s Broc
Hepler, of Kittanning, Pa., secured second place late
in the race and earned his second career podium finish.
Yamaha’s Michael Blose, of Phoenix, Ariz., finished
third, marking his first-career podium finish.
“
In my heat race, I had a crash and was forced to play
catch up,” said Stewart. “I heard all of
the fans cheering me on, and that was very inspirational.
This is a special race for me because I broke Jeremy
McGrath’s record and to be in the same level as
him is an awesome feeling; that is why I have a McGrath
jersey with me tonight.”
