HOUSTON
(February 14, 2004) - Before 45,126 fans at Reliant
Stadium, Yamaha’s Chad Reed, who won
last year’s 250cc main in Houston, won his
fifth THQ World Supercross GP/THQ AMA Supercross
Series race. Kawasaki’s James Stewart, of Haines
City, Fla., won the opening round of THQ AMA Supercross
Series 125cc Eastern Regional competition.
Reed
earned his third Butterfinger $1,500 holeshot award
of the season in the 250cc main event, edging
out KTM’s Grant Langston, of Temecula, Calif.,
and Yamaha’s Erick Vallejo, of Dallas, Texas.
Honda’s Kevin Windham, of Centerville, Miss.,
had a mid-pack start and moved into second place
but was unable to catch Reed. Honda’s Mike
LaRocco, of Corona, Calif., finished third.
“
I rode a little tight out there tonight,” said
Windham. “I did the best I could and need to
look forward to the rest of the season. I started catching
Chad (Reed), but then I tightened up.”
“
Kevin (Windham) started catching me and I could see
him, but then he slowed down,” said Reed. “When
I saw him catching me, I started charging harder in
the whoops. There was a lot of fun, technical stuff
out there tonight."
Suzuki’s Broc Hepler, of Kittanning, Pa., earned
the holeshot in the 125cc main event, leading Yamaha’s
Matthieu Lalloz, of Murrieta, Calif., out of turn one.
Stewart, who won his heat race, started mid-pack but
passed Hepler for the lead on lap three down the start
straight. Hepler held on to finish second place in
the first supercross race of his career. Kawasaki’s
Eric Sorby finished third.
“
I had a bad start because I was spinning down the start
straight,” said Stewart on his first-ever 125cc
Eastern Regional win. “I made some good passes
the field started to separate. I am so happy to ride
for the fans on the East Coast.”
