ANAHEIM,
Calif., (Oct. 16, 2003) - Good news out of
Team Yamaha's camp today as it was just learned that
rider Tim Ferry will not have to undergo surgery
as previously thought to repair a severely injured
thumb - suffered while riding for Team USA in the
recent Motocross des Nations in Belgium.
Ferry,
who injured the thumb in an accident on the fourth lap
of the very first practice session, was
able to soldier on for the United States and race
to a top ten finish - despite being in excruciating
pain and barely able to hold on to the handlebars
of his YZ 450F.
"
The track was muddy and I laid it out over a table
top, lost the front end when I landed," explained
Ferry. "I twisted it (the thumb) back - far -
and could tell right away something was wrong. The
end result was that I couldn't ride the way I wanted
to the whole weekend and rode in quite a bit of pain,
which wasn't much fun."
Honored
to be selected to represent the United States at the
des Nations, Ferry had focused solely on the
once-a-year race, continuing his Outdoor National-style
training and choosing to forgo the move back to the
YZ 250 for some highly important track time for supercross.
"
It was a sacrifice that I was happy to make for our
country," said Ferry. "I also missed out
on a chance at a big chunk of money at the US Open,
but it's something I felt compelled to do. Guys like
us, including RC and Ryno, make pretty good money doing
what we do. But the Motocross des Nations happens only
once a year and going to race for our country was very
important to me."
Ferry
will be in a splint for two to three weeks, then it will
be determined if he can get back on his bike,
making the transition from the four-stroke back to
the two-stroke. In the mean time he's been staying
on top of his cardio training, working out with a
local bicycle road racing club.
